Treatment Procedure
During the first visit, parents will complete a short health-history form and have the opportunity to discuss any concerns with the dentist.
Our team gently introduces the child to the dental environment — including the dental chair, instruments, sounds, and smells. Whenever possible, we demonstrate procedures on a tooth model before any treatment begins to help the child understand what to expect.
The dentist then performs a gentle head and neck check-up and examines the teeth, gums, and bite. Depending on the child’s age and comfort level, the visit may include:
- A simple oral examination of the teeth, gums, and jaw
- Basic cleaning (plaque removal and gentle polishing)
- Application of preventive agents such as fluoride or sealants, if appropriate
- Advice and demonstration on brushing, flossing, and diet
The focus of the first visit is to build trust and comfort, ensuring the dental clinic feels friendly and non-threatening.
During regular visits, the dentist will:
- Clean the teeth by removing plaque and tartar
- Polish the teeth and monitor the development of baby and permanent teeth
- Apply preventive treatments such as fluoride varnish or sealants to strengthen enamel and protect against decay
The dentist will also monitor dental growth, including:
- Health of baby teeth
- Space maintenance for adult teeth
- Jaw growth and tooth alignment
Child-friendly behaviour management techniques are used throughout the visit, including explaining each step, allowing breaks when needed, and positive reinforcement such as praise or small rewards.
Parents and caregivers receive guidance on brushing and flossing techniques, diet and sugar intake, and advice on when to schedule the next visit.
If tooth decay or damage is identified, the dentist will recommend gentle, child-appropriate treatments, such as fillings or sealants, using minimally invasive methods. For more complex concerns — such as early orthodontic issues or alignment problems — a tailored treatment plan and appropriate follow-up will be discussed with parents.
A calm and reassuring environment is maintained throughout treatment, with continued parental support and behaviour-management techniques to minimise stress.
Aftercare instructions are provided, including:
- How to care for treated teeth
- Oral hygiene routines at home
- Dietary recommendations
- Scheduling of the next visit
The emphasis is always on long-term habit building, helping children develop positive dental experiences and lifelong oral-health routines.

Why Dentistry for Kids?
Strong Foundation Early
Early dental visits help children get used to dental care, making future visits easier and less frightening.
Protect Baby Teeth
Baby teeth help with speech, chewing, and guiding permanent teeth treating problems early prevents future complications.
Prevent Decay & Misalignment
Regular check-ups and preventive treatments reduce risk of cavities, tooth loss, and crooked permanent teeth later.
Build Lifelong Oral Habits
Learning to brush, floss, and visit the dentist regularly from a young age sets the stage for healthy teeth into adulthood.

When should I bring my child for their first dentist visit?
We recommend bringing your child for their first dental visit when their first tooth erupts, or by their first birthday.
Many adults fear dental visits because of negative childhood experiences or lack of early exposure.Introducing your child to the dentist early helps build positive associations, reducing fear and anxiety as they grow.
Early dental visits:
- Encourage good oral hygiene habits from a young age
- Allow children to become familiar with the dental environment
- Help establish brushing and flossing as part of their daily routine
- Lay the foundation for long-term oral health
Children are naturally curious. Early exposure helps them learn about dental care in a relaxed and friendly setting.
Baby teeth are important too!
Many parents assume baby teeth are not important because they eventually fall out. However, baby teeth play a critical role in your child’s development.
Baby teeth help:
- Support speech development
- Guide jaw growth and facial muscle development
- Maintain space for permanent teeth
- Guide adult teeth into the correct position
Baby teeth usually start falling out around age 6. If decay in baby teeth is left untreated, it can lead to early tooth loss, causing nearby teeth to shift. This may result in crooked or crowded permanent teeth later on.
Keeping baby teeth healthy is essential for your child’s overall dental health.
Emergency Care for Children
Dental emergencies can happen during play or sports. Prompt care is important to protect your child’s oral health.
In cases of severe decay or damage, gentle dental surgery may be required to prevent infection or pain. Children’s dentists are trained to carry out these procedures with a strong focus on comfort and reassurance.
If a tooth is knocked out:
- Handle it by the crown (top part), not the root
- If possible, gently place it back into the socket
- If not, keep it moist in milk and seek dental care immediately
Regular dental visits help prevent many emergencies by detecting issues early.
Dental Fillings and Restorative Care for Kids
When cavities develop, dental fillings help restore the tooth and prevent further decay. Materials such as tooth-coloured composite fillings are commonly used for a natural appearance.
In cases of more extensive damage, dental crowns may be recommended to protect the tooth.
Early detection through regular check-ups allows for minimally invasive treatment, keeping procedures simpler and more comfortable for children.
Nutrition and Oral Health in Childhood
Diet plays a key role in your child’s dental health.
Good habits include:
- Limiting sugary snacks and drinks
- Encouraging water instead of sweet beverages
- Eating foods rich in calcium and vitamins
A balanced diet, combined with proper brushing and flossing, significantly reduces the risk of tooth decay and gum problems.
Technology and Modern Tools in Kids’ Dentistry
Modern dental technology helps make visits more comfortable and less stressful for children.
These may include:
- Digital X-rays with lower radiation
- Intraoral cameras for accurate diagnosis
- Child-friendly educational tools
Minimally invasive treatment techniques
These advancements improve care quality while creating positive dental experiences that encourage lifelong oral health habits.

Handling your child at Ocean Dental
You may be worried that kids are hard to handle on the dental treatment chair during dental care, but not to worry, there are ways to manage their behaviour when in the hands of children friendly professionals.
Paediatric dentists use behaviour management techniques to help children feel at ease during their visit, addressing anxieties and encouraging a positive experience. The dental team always prioritizes the child’s comfort throughout the visit.
- Tell-Show-Do: Children are afraid of things that they do not know. Thus, our pediatric dentist will always explain to them verbally, followed by showing them on a tooth model of what will be taking place before actually carrying it out.
- Enhancing control: By giving the child a sense of control, they will be more acceptable towards trying something new. This can be done by teaching them a stop signal, such as raising their arm to signal the dentist to stop. This will be rehearsed, and the dentist will act accordingly to gain the trust of the child.
- Positive reinforcement: Whatever the child finds enjoyable or satisfying can act as positive reinforcement – for example, a sticker, a badge, or even just a verbal praise to reward them for good performance.
- Distraction: If the child is too afraid, distractions to shift their attention away from the treatment procedure with cartoon shows, music, ceiling tv monitors, or even just chatting with them is useful.
Using positive language is also important to reassure children and enhance their comfort, helping to create a friendly and encouraging environment during their dental visit.

FAQs
Got questions? Relax, we’ve got your back
When should I bring my child for his/her first dental visit?
It is recommended to bring your child for a first dental centre visit when his/her first baby tooth erupts.
The first visit is usually meant for acclimatization – for the child to get comfortable with the dental treatment room, sit on the dental chair, and build a good relationship with the dentist. During this visit, the kids dentist may perform a dental checkup and a thorough examination to assess your child’s oral health and identify any potential issues early.
It certainly should not be a stressful experience but more of an enjoyable experience.
Are baby teeth important?
Yes they are!
They provide the necessary space for permanent teeth to line up underneath the gums and erupt properly.
Tooth decay – if not addressed right away – may lead to early tooth loss, resulting in a loss of space due to drifting of adjacent teeth, and possibly future crooked permanent teeth.
Maintaining healthy baby teeth is crucial for your child’s oral health, as it helps ensure proper dental development and prevents issues that can affect their teeth as they grow.
When does the first baby teeth erupt?
The general age for first teeth to erupt is around six months old. Baby-tooth will continue to grow up to approximately two years old before the primary teeth are fully grown.
Starting from 6 years old, the first adult teeth will begin to erupt, and subsequently, all the baby-tooth will begin to be replaced one by one. This whole process will continue up to approximately 14 years old (excluding wisdom teeth).
I see an adult tooth growing at the back of my child’s baby tooth, what should I do?
Depending on your child’s age and the location of the teeth, the baby tooth may eventually drop out on its own. However, in some cases, due to the poor alignment of the adult teeth growing out, the child’s teeth may not drop and thus require some professional help from our dentist.
To put yourself at ease, contact us for a check-up appointment with our dentist. If you notice any alignment issues, parents should schedule a dental appointment to have your child’s teeth assessed and treated early.
How to prepare for your child's visit to the dentist?
Parental support is important too. During dentistry for children, we encourage one of the parents to be sitting on the treatment chair, hugging your child throughout the treatment.
Positive dentist visits and regular visits to the dentist help children build confidence and reduce anxiety. Establishing a routine of regular visits ensures your child becomes familiar with the dental environment, making each visit more comfortable and fostering lifelong healthy oral habits.
This will not only make your child feel more secure and comfortable but also prevent them from having sudden movement, which may unintentionally hurt themselves.
What to expect on your first visit to a paediatric dentist?
The first visit for a child to the dental clinic is usually meant for acclimatisation – for your child to get comfortable with the dental treatment room, sit on the dental chair and build a good relationship with the dentist and nurse.
It certainly should not be a stressful experience but more of an enjoyable experience. It is very important for our dentist to build a good rapport with your child prior to checking their mouth as this will increase the likeliness of full cooperation from the child.
On the first visit, our paediatric dentists may also discuss with the parents to find out more about the child, such as their personality, diet and even hobbies and favorite cartoon. Our dentist may also share some techniques which we use in handling children at Ocean Dental. In addition, the first visit may include a risk assessment and caries risk assessment to identify potential dental issues early and provide a comprehensive assessment as part of preventive oral health care.
How often should I bring my child to the dentist?
Just like adults, children should visit the dentist every 6 months. Some dentists may schedule visits more often, such as every 3 months.
Regular visits are essential for maintaining your child’s dental health, as they allow for early detection of issues and help establish good oral hygiene habits. This can build comfort and confidence in the child especially for those who have more phobia. More frequent visits can also help keep an eye on a development problem too!
