Safe and comfortable dental experience with our kid-friendly approach.
Many people are afraid of visiting the dentist for dental treatment because of two main reasons: they had a bad experience since young or were not exposed to it since young.
Therefore, an excellent way to help your child develop good dental care habits for their oral health is to get them positively exposed to a dentist as early as their first tooth erupts.
Starting from a young age, their curiosity will allow them to learn more about oral health care, and this will subconsciously incorporate regular brushing and flossing of teeth into their daily routine.
You may be worried that kids are hard to handle on the dental treatment chair during dental care, but not to worry, there are ways to manage their behaviour when in the hands of children friendly professionals.
Many parents are not aware of their child’s baby teeth’ importance since they will drop off eventually.
However, baby tooth serve essential functions such as aiding in speech development at a young age, developing jawbones and facial muscles, maintaining space for the permanent teeth, and guiding them into the correct position.
These primary tooth usually start dropping from the age of 6. This means that the permanent teeth are growing out and are pushing the milk teeth out.
Decay in the baby’s tooth – if not addressed right away – may lead to early tooth loss, resulting in a loss of space due to drifting of adjacent teeth, and possibly future crooked permanent teeth.
It is recommended to bring your child for a first dental centre visit when his/her first baby tooth erupts.
The first visit is usually meant for acclimatization – for the child to get comfortable with the dental treatment room, sit on the dental chair, and build a good relationship with the dentist.
It certainly should not be a stressful experience but more of an enjoyable experience.
Yes they are!
They provide the necessary space for permanent teeth to line up underneath the gums and erupt properly.
Tooth decay – if not addressed right away – may lead to early tooth loss, resulting in a loss of space due to drifting of adjacent teeth, and possibly future crooked permanent teeth.
The general age for first teeth to erupt is around six months old. Baby-tooth will continue to grow up to approximately two years old before the primary teeth are fully grown.
Starting from 6 years old, the first adult teeth will begin to erupt, and subsequently, all the baby-tooth will begin to be replaced one by one. This whole process will continue up to approximately 14 years old (excluding wisdom teeth).
Depending on your child’s age and the location of the teeth, the baby tooth may eventually drop out on its own. However, in some cases, due to the poor alignment of the adult teeth growing out, the child’s teeth may not drop and thus require some professional help from our dentist.

Parental support is important too. During dentistry for children, we encourage one of the parents to be sitting on the treatment chair, hugging your child throughout the treatment.
This will not only make your child feel more secure and comfortable but also prevent them from having sudden movement, which may unintentionally hurt themselves.
The first visit for a child to the dental clinic is usually meant for acclimatisation – for your child to get comfortable with the dental treatment room, sit on the dental chair and build a good relationship with the dentist and nurse.
It certainly should not be a stressful experience but more of an enjoyable experience. It is very important for our dentist to build a good rapport with your child prior to checking their mouth as this will increase the likeliness of full cooperation from the child.
On the first visit, our paediatric dentists may also discuss with the parents to find out more about the child, such as their personality, diet and even hobbies and favorite cartoon. Our dentist may also share some techniques which we use in handling children at Ocean Dental.
Just like adults, children should visit the dentist every 6 months. Some dentists may schedule visits more often, such as every 3 months.
This can build comfort and confidence in the child especially for those who have more phobia. More frequent visits can also help keep an eye on a development problem too!
