Orthodontics, or commonly known as braces, is the treatment to straighten of your teeth. There is no age limit for orthodontic treatment.

The most common reason for straightening teeth is to improve one’s appearance. It is true that well aligned teeth boosts one’s self-confidence, but the benefits of braces goes way beyond just aesthetics. Straight teeth are easier to brush and floss, which improves your ability to better maintain your oral hygiene. Well aligned teeth reduces poor biting and chewing which may lead to problems with the TMJ (temporomandibular joint) and even digestion problems.

There are different types of braces available in the market, each with its own advantages.

  • Traditional metal braces consist of metal brackets and metal wires, secured by coloured elastics known as modules.

  • Ceramic braces are less visible compared to the traditional metal braces, yet equally effective. Only the wires are made of metal, which can be seen up close.

  • Self-ligating braces eliminates the need for elastics to secure the metal wire, which thus reduces friction and pressure, delivering faster treatment, fewer appointments and greater comfort.

  • Clear aligners (Eg. Invisalign) consist of a series of clear removable plastic tray aligners which gradually straighten teeth. They are almost unnoticeable and are good for less severe cases.

Different types of braces may suit different individuals, depending on the case and requirements. For some cases, such as overcrowding, teeth extraction might be necessary to create space in order to achieve optimal result.

Investing in orthodontic treatment to correct a problem earlier in age is generally less costly than restorative dental treatment required to treat more serious problems that can develop in the later years. But remember, diligently wear your retainers after you have completed your orthodontic treatment to minimise chances of relapse.
